Bob,

Thanks much for this. I have let the site go dormant for a bit, so didn't see this until now, but it's reason enough to be less dormant.

Jenna,

Sorry about that. I don't have a subscription, but for some reason, computers at the university are allowed on the site without one. I'll get in some trouble if I post a pdf, but let me see if I can come up with a work-around.

John,

Thanks very much for your thoughtful and well-written article on this ever-important issue. The more awareness that is raised regarding the potential lethality of these situations, the better. Also, the effect on child witnesses of DV is so unpredictable, but almost always has negative outcomes. The little boy carrying the knife to protect his Mom is a story I hear and see FAR too often. Let's all think about how we can contribute to prevention of DV during October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and throughout the year!

Thanks again,
Kim Brown Campbell

A particular moment in this article struck me in my everyday work...."they were entertained by the suffering of others and laughed at it." I observe this behavior occasionally and by reading this article, have come to understand the immediacy and vital importance of each of us to attempt to reach out in ways to our clients/their families to let them know how we value, care and respect them. Perhaps beginning to meet with them in a journey toward healing.

This article contrasts sharply with Viktor Frankel’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Certainly the circumstances are different but Frankel would argue there is an inherent human goodness that comes out in the most unlikely places and these places are often surrounded by nearly unimaginable evil. I prefer Frankel’s view. But also have an appreciation for the thinness of civilizations’ veneer. Having been a cop, one quickly recognizes the human capacity to do harm to one’s fellowman. I still prefer Frankel’s view; perhaps I am just a dreamer. J.

I think that it would be great if you would share more of your personal experiences with secondary traumatization, Jim. I'd like all of us to do that. I find that it has been like overtraining as an athlete -- it creeps up on one so slowly that by the time it dawns in awareness, there is usually injury of some sort. Our perceptual systems are built economically: they sense edges, big sudden changes, not subtle, slow ones. When we get traumatized big time, all of a sudden, it gets our attention. When it happens slowly and we have this perhaps unacknowledged attitude that our skills will protect us from all, we may stumble in wonder at some point. I have done this. I have wondered why I was tired and weeping, only to journal and discover that I was worn out and sad and needed to talk to someone who understood and could contain it all -- just like our clients have needed. Some of the stuff I have heard has hurt me. I don't think I could be a feeling, loving human being and avoid this. I'm sure it is something that all of us experience in our own fashion. Sharing stories will be healing and informative, I think!
